A taste of Amla
In Ayurvedic medicine, taste is all-important. Different food-materials are categorized according to the six defined tastes : sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent.

A correct balancing of these tastes is considered essential for the growth of a healthy body. in other words, a healthy diet has to contain a combination of all six tastes.

Herbs such as emblic myrobalan (popularly known in india as amla) cater to all the six tastes at one go. They act on the body to increase or decrease the three humours : kapha, pitta and vata.

fully recognizing its importance, the Hindus associate it with the mythological Lord of Wealth, Kubera. It is also referred to as dhatri, the nurse. It rejuvenates the body cells, tones up the tissues and strengthens the organs. It is believed to increase the life-energy (prana) and has a sattvic (soothing) effect on the mind.

There are two varieties of amla : the wild one with small fruits and the cultivated one, called Banarsi, with bigger fruits. Both are Known to possess medicinal value.

Almost all parts of this plant are of great medicinal use in the traditional systems of medicine : leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, roots and bark. Of them, fruits constitute the more significant drug.
